Senator JONES —On behalf of Senator Reynolds, I present the 47th report of the Committee of Privileges, entitled Person Referred to in the Senate (Councillor Michael Samaras).

Ordered that the report be printed.

Senator JONES —by leave—I move:

  That the report be adopted.

I seek leave to incorporate in Hansard a statement by the chairperson.

  Leave granted.

  The statement read as follows

This is the twentieth report of the Committee concerning a matter raised by a person under Privilege Resolution 5 of 25 February 1988.

On 11 May 1994, the President referred to the Committee a letter from Councillor Michael Samaras relating to remarks made by Senator Baume on 3 May 1994 in a notice of motion. Councillor Samaras wrote to the President on 7 May 1994, and the matter was referred to the Committee as a submission under Privilege Resolution 5. The Committee has considered the submission and recommends that a response agreed to by Councillor Samaras and the Committee be incorporated in Hansard.

As the Committee always reminds the Senate, in matters of this nature it does not judge the truth or otherwise of statements made by honourable Senators or persons. Rather, it ensures that a person's submission, and ultimately the response it recommends, accord with the criteria set out in Privilege Resolution 5.

I commend the report to the Senate.
