Senator SPINDLER —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)expresses its support for the anti-smoking campaign and its aims of encouraging people to give up smoking or not to take it up and welcomes the beneficial results for community health;

  (b)notes the effect of the reduction of tobacco use on tobacco growing communities and families;

  (c)expresses concern that the 50 per cent mixing regulations and Tobacco Industry Stabilisation Plan will end on 30 September 1995;

  (d)notes that the import quota of 11 184 tonnes set in the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade has severe implications for the future of tobacco production in Australia;

  (e)urges the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy (Senator Collins) to provide financial assistance for research and development into alternative crops to enable those tobacco growers who wish to switch from tobacco growing to do so; and

  (f)supports the efforts of those communities largely dependent on tobacco growing to find alternative industries to enable those communities to survive.
