(Question No. 1363)

Senator Chamarette asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice, on 4 May 1994:

  (1) Is the Minister aware of reports that Theofylos Georgiades, a pro-Kurdish Cypriot, was assassinated outside his home in Cyprus in March 1994.

  (2) Have there been any indications that the assassination was carried out by an agent of the Turkish Secret Services; if so please provide details of such information.

Senator Gareth Evans —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) I am aware of reports that Mr Theofylos Georgiades, a pro-Kurdish Cypriot who was employed at the Government's press and information office, was shot and killed on 22 March 1994.

  (2) The Cypriot Government has alleged that the killing was carried out by the Turkish Secret Service. I have no knowledge of what evidence might support this allegation.
