Senator TEAGUE (6.12 p.m.) —I indicated in my speech during the second reading debate that we in the opposition wanted to hear the arguments about the Democrats' first five proposed amendments. I said that I was most concerned about the matters that had been the subject of report by the scrutiny of bills committee of the Senate. Senator Bell has clarified that those five earlier amendments have been replaced by the two now in front of us—in fact, old amendments 12 and 14. This greatly assists the whole process because the two amendments that are persisting are, in fact, directly related to the concerns of the scrutiny of bills committee. Accordingly, I will not have to oppose the ones that have been withdrawn. I will indicate that as the government and the Democrats are supporting these two amendments, but, more particularly, because they address the concerns of the scrutiny of bills committee, the opposition will also support them.
