(Question No. 1204)

Senator Patterson asked the Minister for Employment, Education and Training, upon notice, on 8 March 1994:

  (1) Does the department, or any of its agencies, produce electoral profiles (or other like documents) outlining relevant programs, services or other forms of assistance provided in individual federal electorates; if so, when were these electoral profiles (or other like documents) first produced and how frequently are they produced.

  (2) Is a copy of these electoral profiles (or other like documents) provided to the Parliamentary Library; if not, why not.

  (3) Please provide a copy of the most up-to-date edition of each of these electoral profiles (or other like documents) for all federal electorates to the Parliamentary Library.

Senator Schacht —The Minister for Employment, Education and Training has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) The Department produces a range of information and briefing material on the programs and services it administers. Some of this material is collated on an electoral basis. Some briefs of this nature were first produced after the Department was established in 1987. A series of briefs covering all electorates has been developed. The briefings are updated as the need for a current briefing arises. A complete revision is made once a year to maintain the currency of all briefs.

  (2) and (3) These briefs are internal Departmental documents that are provided as factual briefing to Ministers and to the Parliamentary Secretary in the Portfolio when they visit electorates. They include company details for firms assisted under some OLMA programs that have been provided on a confidential basis. Such material should not be available through the Parliamentary Library.
