Senator TIERNEY —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)condemns the Labor Government for all but ignoring regional Australia in the White Paper on employment and growth released on 4 May 1994;

  (b)notes:

    (i)with dismay, that the greatest shortcoming of the White Paper is its treatment of rural areas, and

    (ii)that the recommendations of recent expensive reports into regional Australia have not been addressed;

  (c)calls on the Labor Government to address the serious unemployment in regional areas, which is standing at 16.4 per cent in Newcastle and 17 per cent on the north coast of New South Wales;

  (d)objects to only 4.1 per cent of the spending in the White Paper being directed to regional development;

  (e)condemns as inadequate the paltry $70 million over 4 years for regional infrastructure announced in the White Paper; and

  (f)urges the Labor Government to stop ignoring regional Australia and show some concern about the welfare and future of all Australians.
