Senator CROWLEY —Further to the answer I gave to Senator Patterson today, I have to add the advice provided to me by Minister Baldwin:

As part of the white paper employment strategy, it is intended to encourage women under 40 with no dependent children and older women with recent work force experience to remain in or re-enter the work force. That is because the work force experience of these women is likely to be much more substantial than for older women or those with children. The activity test will not be applied to women over 40 at 1 July 1995 unless they have had recent work force experience. In 1987, the government decided to phase out the widow B pension, and at the time the opposition supported that change. However, I understand that the Minister for Social Security is now looking at the circumstances of older women affected by the phasing out of widows B pension.
