Senator CHAPMAN (3.58 p.m.) —Progress was reported on the Banking (State Bank of South Australia and Other Matters) Bill last week following questions and discussions in relation to the unfunded superannuation liability of the State Bank. Progress was reported because Senator Watson had raised specific questions; Senator Kernot, on behalf of the Democrats, had foreshadowed an amendment that she was going to move in relation to that matter; and there was an element of confusion in relation to this particular issue.

As recently as this morning, I had discussions with Senator Sherry and I have been promised a briefing from Treasury officials on this matter. I still have not received that briefing. I do not believe we can further consider this bill until I have had time to consider that briefing and made some assessment of it in relation to what our attitude will be on the particular issues that have been raised.
