Senator ABETZ —My question is directed to the Leader of the Government in the Senate. The minister will be aware of Mr Keating's dismissal of his senior Labor left wing colleague's concern about the privatisation agenda his government is running as `a little bit of chattering.' Does he concur with that remark? Can he give an absolute assurance that the announced privatisation plans will not be derailed by his left wing colleagues in his party?

Senator GARETH EVANS —If Senator Abetz thinks I am silly enough in this place or in any other public context to disagree with my leader, he is a bit wetter behind the ears than I thought he was.

Senator ABETZ —Mr President, I ask a supplementary question. The other part of the question was: can he give an absolute assurance that the announced privatisation plans will not be derailed by his left wing colleagues, so many of whom sit behind him?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I give an absolute assurance to the honourable senator that I will follow my leader across whatever hot coals he may choose to lay down for me and the rest of the party.
