(Question No. 1301)

Senator Abetz asked the Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories, upon notice, on 30 March 1994:

Please provide details of: (a) all general purpose grants made to organisations, groups, individual people or any group of individuals for conservation or environmental purposes since March 1983 including the name of the recipient, and the amount of the grant; (b) all particular purpose grants made to organisations, groups, individual people or any group of individuals for conservation or environmental purposes since March 1983 including the name of the recipient, the amount of the grant and the purpose for which it was made available; and (c) any acquittal requirements attached to any of the grants made under (a) or (b) and indicating whether these requirements have been satisfied in full, or, if they were not, any reasons supplied as to why the acquittal requirements were not satisfied.

Senator Faulkner —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

There are and have been a number of programs within my portfolio which provide or have provided general purpose and particular purpose grants to bodies for conservation or environmental purposes. Chief among these are general purpose grants made under the Program of Grants to Voluntary Conservation Organisations and particular purpose grants made under the National Estate Grants Program, Save the Bush Program and One Billion Trees Program. Details of these and other grants may be found in the annual reports of the Department, the Australian Heritage Commission and the Australian Nature Conservation Agency.

To list all these grants over the last eleven years, including their acquittal requirements and details, would be a considerable undertaking and I am not prepared to authorise the diversion of significant resources to this task.

For information on grants to environmental organisations and/or for environmental purposes which is additional to that contained in the annual reports, the honourable senator's attention is drawn to the answers to House of Representatives Question on Notice No. 98, Hansard, 8 November 1990, page 3689, for grants from 1983-84 to 1989-90; Senate Question on Notice No. 708, Hansard, 13 August 1991, page 168, and House of Representatives Question on Notice No. 1371, Hansard, 28 April 1992, page 1924, for grants in 1990-91; Senate Question on Notice No. 1618, Hansard, 2 March 1992, page 529, and House of Representatives Question on Notice No. 1116, Hansard, 25 February 1992, page 118, for grants from 1990-91 to 1991-92; House of Representatives Question on Notice No. 1615, Hansard, 17 December 1992, page 4219, for grants in 1991-92; and Senate Question on Notice No. 2170, Hansard, 17 December 1992, page 5522, and House of Representatives Question on Notice No. 636, Hansard, 23 February 1994, page 1212, for grants from 1991-92 to 1992-93.
