Senator CHRIS EVANS (5.28 p.m.) —by leave—I move:

  That the resolution of the Senate of 24 March 1994 referring to the Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs for inquiry and report on the application and interpretation of the third paragraph of section 53 of the Constitution in relation to bills dealing with taxation, be amended as follows:

omit "in relation to bills dealing with taxation".

In responding to the second paragraph of the House of Representatives message, the following explanation should be provided. The second paragraph of the House of Representatives message requests agreement to an order to permit the committees of the two Houses to confer on the matter. Senate standing orders, at standing order 25(1), already provide this authority to confer, so there is no need to agree to such an order.
