(Question No. 1226)

Senator Herron asked the Minister representing the Minister for Communications and the Arts, upon notice, on 16 March 1994:

Did the Australian Broadcasting Corporation pay any money to the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras prior to broadcast.

Senator McMullan —The Minister for Communications and the Arts has provided the following answer, based on information provided by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, to the honourable senator's question:

In producing the Mardi Gras Parade coverage for ABC-TV free-to-air, no money was paid to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Board nor to any other Gay and/or Lesbian organisation.

A percentage of the royalties from the sale of each `Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade' video will be paid to the Mardi Gras Board, who it is understood, will donate the earnings to the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation, which provides direct financial assistance to people living with AIDS.
