(Question No. 1188)

Senator Knowles asked the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, upon notice, on 8 March 1994:

  (1) Has the change from the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs to the Department of Employment, Education and Training resulted in closures of Adult Migrant English program venues and child care facilities for migrants attending english classes; if so, why, how many in each State and where.

  (2) If there were such closures, which Department was responsible—the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs or the Department of Employment, Education and Training.

Senator Bolkus —I am advised that the answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) No. More resources have been provided by the Commonwealth to Adult English as a Second Language (ESL) tuition as a result of the 1992/93 Budget decision. Any changes (closures or opening of new venues for ESL and child care) are related to the changing distribution of demand for ESL under the new arrangements.

  (2) Not applicable.
