(Question No. 1028)


Senator Campbell asked the Minister representing the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 2 February 1994:

  (1) Please provide a state by state breakdown of how many vehicles the department leases through DASFLEET.

  (2) Does the department own and/or lease any vehicles other than from DASFLEET; if so, please provide: (a) a state by state breakdown of the number of vehicles; and (b) an agency by agency breakdown of the number of vehicles.

  (3) As servicing/maintenance and fleet management are no longer tied to DASFLEET, does the department have contracts for these functions with private firms; if so, how many are by private firms, please provide: (a) a state by state breakdown; and (b) an agency breakdown.

  (4) What is the average cost of fleet maintenance agreements entered into by the department.

  (1) The Attorney-General's Department and Portfolio agencies lease 1337 vehicles from DASFLEET which are broken down by State as detailed in the following table:

  (2) The Attorney-General's Department and Portfolio agencies do not lease any vehicles other than from DASFLEET. The Department does own two vehicles which are located at Australian Embassies overseas. Some Portfolio Agencies also own vehicles which are shown state by state in the following table.

  (3) The Department and Portfolio agencies do not have servicing/maintenance and fleet management contracts with private firms. Five vehicles which are leased from DASFLEET by the Family Court of Australia and which are remotely located are serviced on an as required basis by private businesses. The Australian Securities Commission which owns three vehicles have them serviced by private businesses in accordance with the dealers warranty agreement. A state by state breakdown is provided in the following table.

  (4) No separate maintenance agreements currently exist for vehicles either owned or leased from DASFLEET. However, DASFLEET have advised that the maintenance component per standard passenger vehicle is $20.40 per month.

  Note: The above vehicle figures do not include vehicles used by ASIO. The vehicles used by ASIO cover a number of uses, including of a covert nature. As such, for operational reasons, the numbers, types, location, etc of these vehicles are not normally disclosed. The Attorney-General's Department figure of 235 vehicles includes 89 vehicles that are leased from DASFLEET by the Australian Protective Service.
