Senator SPINDLER (8.06 p.m.) —I wish to comment on what Senator Vanstone and the minister have said. The point of the amendment is, as I have explained, that these days police officers carry individual hand-held tape-recorders. There is absolutely no reason why, if there were two or three officers, the search being carried out by each of them cannot be tape-recorded. It is an obvious safeguard for people who are involved in and who are the object of the search. I fail to see that there are any technical difficulties with this particular amendment. Certainly, as has been acknowledged, the principle is fine, so why not take account of the fact that individual officers do carry hand-held tape-recorders?

  Amendment negatived.
