Senator BOLKUS (Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Multicultural Affairs) (11.10 a.m.) —That is something that I have looked at from day one—whether there can be tightening up of judicial review provisions. I have discussed it with Senator Short. Yes, we have looked at it. My personal view was to have considered any further measures in respect of this after the joint standing committee had reported; and that report came down a couple of weeks ago.

As I said earlier, in addressing this issue, the advice that we have had very strongly has been that such further curtailment would be a waste of time, given the other avenues available to people to pursue legal judicial review. At the moment the situation is that the joint standing committee has reported, part of its report is canvassing this particular area, and I am giving that very serious consideration.
