(Question No. 1660)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 17 March 1987:

(1) What progress has been made in the establishment of a biological research station on Christmas Island.

(2) When is it anticipated that such a station will become operative.

(3) What will be the primary functions of such a station.

(4) How many people will staff such a station, and what proportion of the staff is expected to be drawn from the local population.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) to (4) Discussions between the Department of Territories and the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service have been held on the establishment of a Scientific Research Centre on Christmas Island. Further progress is subject to the resolution of funding aspects, consultation with the Christmas Island Assembly, and issuing of appropriate leases.
