Senator PARER —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Treasurer. The Minister will recall that in August last year I asked a question relating to the application of the fringe benefits tax to companies that made ex gratia payments to relatives of employees killed while working. The Minister has recently forwarded to me a reply from the Treasurer indicating that these ex gratia payments are not subject to the fringe benefits tax. I thank him for that advice. Can the Minister now advise whether such ex gratia payments are tax deductible to the companies making those payments?

Senator WALSH —I do have some, admittedly rather vague, recollection of the original question last August, but I do not know the answer to the additional question. I will get it from the Treasurer as soon as I can.
