(Question No. 1663)

Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 17 March 1987:

(1) Can the Minister for Territories advise on whether the Cocos Malay people of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands will be joint venturers in the development of hotel facilities proposed for the Islands.

(2) What efforts have been made to ensure that the Islands' people take an active role in the development and management of tourism facilities on the Islands, in view of the potential of tourism to provide employment and revenue for the Cocos people.

Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) and (2) The Cocos (Keeling) Islands Council initiated a call for expressions of interest from potential tourism development investors on 16 May 1986. This call stipulated that any development should be a joint venture acceptable to the Cocos Malay community and provide employment and vocational training opportunities for the Cocos Malay community.

The principal of the company proposing a tourist development on Direction Island has had several meetings with the Council, the Administrator and the Department of Territories over issues including the community's participation in development and management of the complex.
