Senator Walsh —On 1 December 1986 (Hansard, page 3049) Senator Knowles asked me, as Minister representing the Treasurer, the following question without notice:

Is it a fact that, in the wake of the Keating affair, the Australian Taxation Office has changed its procedures for handling enquiries from the media seeking information about Tax Office procedures concerning late lodgment of returns.

The Treasurer has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

There has been no change to the Commissioner's policy or procedures. In accordance with established arrangements, the Commissioner's officers are available to explain policy and procedural matters. However, where the provision of a published policy document (or part thereof) available under the Freedom of Information Act is necessary to satisfy an enquiry, it may be appropriate to refer the enquiry to the Freedom of Information section of the Taxation Office. This applies regardless of whether the enquiry is from the media or elsewhere.
