(Question No. 1673)

Senator Morris asked the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, upon notice, on 19 March 1987:

(1) Is the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce aware of reports that an Australian company, Information Engineering (Aust) Pty Ltd, has won a $20 million contract for support services and software for the United States Navy.

(2) What research and development grants have been made by the Government to this company and what other Government assistance has it received.

Senator Button —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) I am aware that Information Engineering (Aust) Pty Ltd gained a $20 million contract with the United States Navy. I wrote to Mr Jonathan Farrell, Managing Director, on 13 March of this year offering congratulations on the company's significant achievement, and how this company was in line with Government policy to re-focus on international markets.

(2) (a) The company received a research and development grant under the former Australian Industrial Research and Development Incentives Scheme. The company was allocated a total grant of $545,400 of which it has received $528,100. The project was completed on 31 March 1987-three months ahead of the completion date of 30 June 1987.

The grant was used to develop expert system generator software which together with consulting and education services form the basis of the United States contract.

(2) (b) I am not aware of any other Government assistance that the company has received.
