Senator CHANEY (Leader of the Opposition) —Mr President, I seek leave to advise the Senate on Opposition arrangements with respect to the shadow Ministry.

Leave granted.

Senator Button —How long is this going on?

Senator Gareth Evans —It could be tomorrow, too, and next week, again.

Senator CHANEY —With six weeks out of the next seven being sitting weeks, if Government senators are as excitable as this on day one I tremble to think what they will be like in the seventh week. For the information of honourable senators I wish to advise the Senate that the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Howard) has appointed Senator Michael Baume and Senator Short to the shadow Ministry. Senator Michael Baume will have responsibility for health matters and Senator Short is the new shadow Minister for Finance. As a result of other recently announced changes, I have responsibility for employment and industrial relations--

Senator Button —Chicken!

Senator CHANEY —It was thought that the Leader of the Government in the Senate needed a rest. Senator Durack continues with resources and energy; Senator Messner has responsibility for industry, technology and commerce; Senator Lewis is the shadow Minister in charge of local government and Territories; and Senator Archer remains shadow Special Minister of State and shadow Minister for Science.
