Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy)(12.15) —It codifies the ground rules to be applied in this case and makes it easier and quicker for the law to be applied. As Senator Newman may know-she is a lawyer, is she not?-it is a bit tricky, sometimes, to get an injunction quickly. One runs into many arguments and gaps between interims and further injunctions. Given the policy objectives of the legislation, with which the Opposition disagrees--

Senator Walters —No justice. Just easier and quicker.

Senator GARETH EVANS —It will be the law of the land-not with any assistance from Senator Walters. But if it is the law of the land--

Senator Newman —Regardless of the rights of citizens.

Senator GARETH EVANS —No, it is not regardless of the rights of citizens. Beyond that, our opinions are destined to differ.
