Senator NEWMAN(11.28) —I would like it to be clearly identified to the people in Australia that the Australian Democrats, including Senator Janine Haines, a member of the Standing Committee for the Scrutiny of Bills, just voted against the very recommendations of the Scrutiny of Bills Committee for preserving the civil liberties of our citizens. Let it be clearly understood that when it comes to the crunch Senator Haines will vote for expediency in order to protect trees, but not to protect Australian citizens and their rights. Obviously she does not have any more concern than Senator Evans, the well-known libertarian, for the rights of individual citizens and their protection from self-incrimination. It is a pretty sad state of affairs when these basic rights are trampled on by Senator Evans and Senator Haines, both of whom in other circumstances parade their civil libertarian views.
