Senator GIETZELT —On 2 April Senator Reid asked me about the development of the veterans' home care service program in the Australian Capital Territory. The current position is that officers of my department will meet the ACT Health Authority and Department of Territories officials on 9 April to discuss how the veterans' home care service program can be quickly implemented in the Australian Capital Territory. My departmental officers will also speak to the few organisations that currently provide these types of services to see what arrangements can be made for entitled veterans and their dependants. Senator Reid may also be aware that the Department of Territories has recently advertised for proposals for home and community care program funds to provide services which enable the frail aged and disabled to stay in their homes rather than move into inappropriate or premature residential care. My Department is hopeful that these funds, when allocated, will provide the infrastructure from which the veterans' home care service program can operate in the widest possible way.
