Senator WATSON —I wish to take up the offer afforded by the Minister for Resources and Energy, Senator Gareth Evans, and seek leave to make a personal explanation.

Leave granted.

Senator WATSON —Unfortunately the Minister attributed improper motives to what he thought I might wish to say. I draw the attention of the Senate to the fact that I was somewhat affronted and concerned at the lack of courtesy displayed by the Minister for Education (Senator Ryan). She was aware that this was an important issue. It is a normal courtesy of this place to inform those who are affected or interested in the subject matter being raised on an adjournment debate. Senator Ryan did not follow the usual courtesies that are afforded to members in this place this evening in that she rose and sought to make a personal explanation but did not give notice to the four Tasmanian senators, who had a close interest in the matter and who challenged the initial statement in the first place. I think it is a sad day when the courtesies of this House are ignored for the purposes of putting a political point of view.

Question resolved in the affirmative.

Senate adjourned at 11.20 p.m.
