Senator NEWMAN(10.27) —I draw the chamber's attention to the fact that in clause 8 (3) we see these words:

the Commission shall take account of:

the potential for changes in forestry industry technology . . . the need to ensure sustainable forest yields . . .

Should there not be some kind of inquiry into the dependence of the Tasmanian economy on each of the jobs and the investment in this industry? I am concerned that there is instability to investment in this industry in Tasmania. There does not seem to be any recognition given to the impact on the future of this industry from the work of the Commission itself, in that it is looking at the potential for changes in the industry and technology areas and at such matters as yields and techniques, but the industry is based on the confidence of those who invest in it. This is a very relevant matter when we look later on at the question of compensation. As I see it, there is no provision made for compensation to those who have an investment in the industry. I would like to have the Minister comment on what it seems to me to be a pretty serious omission.
