Senator WALTERS(10.25) —I find it quite incredible that the Government would set up a commission and would attempt to pass legislation through the chamber without having any idea of the cost to government.

Senator Archer —Walsh is getting soft.

Senator WALTERS —Yes. I thought it was the decision of the Minister for Finance (Senator Walsh) that everything would be costed. At a time when we have been told that finance is critical to the Government, when indeed the May economic statement is to be put down cutting costs considerably, I find it very difficult to understand that the Government would not have some estimate of what this whole inquiry would cost. Is the Minister saying that the Government has been so irresponsible as to set up a commission when it has no idea what the cost to the taxpayer will be?
