Senator VIGOR —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate-

(a) regrets the dismissal of the Sydney City Council after a period of rumour-mongering about its future;

(b) notes that the people in Warringah Shire, New South Wales have only now had local decision-making restored to them after a Council sacking on spurious grounds;

(c) laments the intention of the NSW Unsworth Government to place the Sydney City Council sacking beyond the purview of the courts;

(d) urges the Unsworth and all other State governments not to interfere politically in the operations of individual councils on the grounds of apparent political convenience; and

(e) endorses the principle that local government should be recognised and afforded proper protection in the Australian and various State constitutions.
