(Question No. 1516)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 13 November 1986:

(1) Has the Australian Police Ministers' Council written to the Government stating that the operation of the Australian Drug Data Base (ADDB) was crucial in order to meet undertakings made by both the Prime Minister and the Special Minister of State since 1984.

(2) Is the Australian Drug Data Base fully functional.

(3) Is its effectiveness being jeopardised by the Commonwealth's lack of funding support.

(4) Does the ABCI have sufficient staff to operate at the required levels.

(5) What requests for essential staff and equipment are outstanding or under discussion as at 7 November 1986.

Senator Tate —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) The then Chairman of the Australian Police Ministers' Council wrote along the lines suggested. He went on to welcome the provision by the Commonwealth of $1.5 million towards the cost of the further development of ABCI.

(2) No.

(3), (4) and (5) The Australian Police Minister's Council has under consideration a number of development options which include the question of staffing.
