(Question No. 1511)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 13 November 1986:

Has any of the additional $1.5m Drug Offensive funding promised to the ABCI been expended; if so, in what areas.

Senator Tate —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

Yes, I am advised that the Department of the Special Minister of State has allocated $1.5m for computer plant and equipment as follows:

$1.0m spent in 1985-86; and

$0.5m allocated in 1986-87.

The Department agreed to expenditure of $1m in 1985-86 to purchase Rank Zerox equipment only after the ABCI Director gave a written assurance that the equipment would be sufficient to ``allow the law enforcement aspects of the ADDB [Australian Drug Data Base] to be implemented when the staffing situation has been satisfactorily resolved and further consultancy has been completed''. However, subsequent ABCI proposals sought funds for equipment well beyond that level.
