(Question No. 1501)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Special Minister of State, upon notice, on 13 November 1986:

(1) Has the Minister or the Department of the Special Minister of State ever proposed that the funding and/or administration of the ABCI be placed under the control of a Federal statutory authority.

(2) If the funding of the ABCI were placed under the control of a statutory authority, would the `administration and operation of the ABCI in the performance of its function' remain `independent of any one participating government or agency'.

Senator Tate —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) and (2) The Federal Government has not put forward any proposal. Informal discussion at officer level was undertaken of the possibility of all national common police services constituting a statutory authority. The matter did not proceed further.
