Senator Walters asked the Minister representing the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment, upon notice, on 4 December 1986:

(1) Does Mr West draw any salary or expenses as a member of the Government's Advisory Committee on Logging in Tasmania; if so, what are the terms of the Consultancy in relation to:

(a) salary;

(b) arrangements of reimbursement of costs incurred;

(c) the requirements on Mr West's time;

(d) the conditions of his appointment; and

(e) the terms of the appointment.

(2) Will the Minister table the agreement with Mr West setting out the terms and conditions of his Consultancy.


Senator Ryan —The Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Mr West is a member of the Government's Advisory Committee on Tasmanian Forestry Operations which is the responsibility of the Minister for Primary Industry. Separately Mr West was engaged as a consultant by the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment to provide advice on environmental issues. The consultancy ceased on 30.1.87.

(a), (b), (d) and (e) (i) Advisory Committee on Tasmanian Forestry Operations-Mr West receives remuneration for fees, travel and incidental costs in attending meetings as per Determination No. 12 of the Remuneration Tribunal 1986 Review.

(ii) Consultant to the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment-$10,500 per annum, updated in line with National Wage Case decisions, and approved travel costs as determined under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 (Determination No. MC/49, dated 19 November 1986).

(c) (i) Advisory Committee on Tasmanian Forestry Operations-The Committee has met, to date, on 5 occasions between 22 October 1986 and 27 November 1986.

(ii) Consultant to the Minister for Arts, Heritage and Environment-Mr West was engaged on a part-time basis, working one week in four.

(2) The Minister sent a copy of the agreement with Mr West to you.
