Senator TATE (Special Minister of State)(6.28) —I suppose because this Government does not want to appear to be acting in an unduly prejudiced way and is looking to an inquiry to provide it with the sound basis for its decision-making and to try to resolve a conflict. Particularly, it wants to examine assertions by those in the conservation movement who claim that alternative resources are available to forestry operations in Tasmania. That particular claim needs to be analysed and dealt with finally by a panel which, in Senator Watson's words, is so well balanced that the results of that inquiry can have such credibility that this claim can be assessed and understood by the Australian community and by governments once and for all.
