Senator SHORT(5.45) —The Opposition supports this motion moved by Senator Coates. As he said, the time limit that was set for the original reporting date of 1 April is very difficult for the Standing Committee on Finance and Government Operations to meet. The Committee agreed that it is not practicable to meet that date and the Opposition agrees with that. As Senator Coates said, there had been some suggestion that the date might be changed and made open-ended. I am very pleased to see that wise counsel has prevailed in relation to this matter and we now have a firm reporting date. The Senate will therefore have on or by 7 May a report from the Finance and Government Operations Committee in relation to the interest rate paper and matters surrounding that which it has been requested to investigate. It is an important piece of work that has been given to the Committee. As a member of that Committee, I look forward to participating in the preparation of what I hope will be a useful report for the Senate.

Question resolved in the affirmative.
