Senator CHANEY —I ask the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security: Given reports today and over the weekend relating variously to further reductions in family allowance or the use of the tax system to claw back family allowance in the May mini-Budget, will the Minister advise the Senate whether there will be any changes to family allowance entitlements and, in particular, any reduction of such entitlements in the May mini-Budget?

Senator TATE —Even if I had such knowledge, of course I would not divulge it prior to final consideration of or deliberation on those matters by Cabinet in preparation for the 14 May statement. So I think my answer is no.

Senator CHANEY —Mr President, I ask a supplementary question. I like the bit at the end of the Minister's answer when he said: `I think my answer is no'. Is the Minister saying that there will be no reductions in family allowance?

Senator TATE —My answer is no, I will not be able to help Senator Chaney to have a preview of any Government decision in relation to this matter.
