Senator BUTTON —Yesterday at Question Time, Senator Bjelke-Petersen asked me a question concerning the bicentennial medallions to commemorate our 200th year which were to be presented to primary, secondary, pre-school and kindergarten children. She asked:

Is it a fact that a decision has now been made by the Government not to issue the commemorative medallions to the pre-school and kindergarten children?

I undertook to obtain an answer as quickly as possible. The answer is as follows. The Government has made no decision on this matter. Any decision is a matter for the Australian Bicentennial Authority. As part of its national program for the Bicentenary, the Australian Bicentennial Authority proposes to distribute a commemorative medallion to all the primary and secondary school children of Australia. It was not intended at any stage to distribute the medallion to pre-school and kindergarten children.
