Senator Jessop asked the Minister for Finance, upon notice, on 10 December 1986:

Can the Minister obtain from the Department or Statutory Authority concerned details of funds provided over the last 4 Budgets by way of grant, contract, recurrent funding, consultancy fees, property rental, or any other means, for a project or purpose involving any one of the following organisations: Australian Community Health Association, Australian Consumers' Association, Australian Conservation Foundation, Australian Council of Social Service, Victorian Council of Social Service, NSW Council of Social Service, ACT Council of Social Service, Queensland Council of Social Service, S.A. Council of Social Service, W.A. Council of Social Service, Tasmanian Council of Social Service, Australian Council of Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Australian Council on the Ageing, Australian Federation of Consumer Organisations, Australian Pensioners' Federation, Combined Pensioners' Association of NSW, Combined Pensioners' Association of Victoria, Collective of Self Help Groups (Victoria), Disabled Persons International, Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia, Health Issues Centre (Victoria), National Aboriginal and Islanders' Health Organisation, National Women's Health Association, Brisbane Women's Community Health Centre, Youth Affairs Council of Australia, Student Initiatives in Community Health, Australian National Association for Mental Health, Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council, Health Consumers' Forum, Rupert Public Interest Movement, Doctors' Reform Society, National Association of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Support Services, Women Against Poverty and Isolation, Medical Consumers' Association; if so, could details be given of: the amount of money involved, the purpose of the funds, the name and address of the sponsor and/or administrator of the funds, the name and address of other organisations involved in the use of the funds and the program or section of the Budget from which the funds were allocated.


Senator Walsh —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

The Department of Finance does not require, in its dealings with departments and statutory authorities, the provision of the detailed information sought on the financial transactions identified in the question. It would be a costly and time-consuming task to gather such information.

As has been the practice of previous Governments, the Government is not prepared to authorise the use of considerable resources of time and money that would be involved in assembling the information requested.
