Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Resources and Energy)(10.18) —Equally, it will be no surprise to learn that the Government opposes the amendments. The first is linked to the previous two amendments, which called for test growing of every applicant variety and which were rejected. Amendment Nos 13 and 14 amount to attempts to introduce the requirement for merit testing, for which earlier amendments have already been rejected. Merit testing is a separate issue. Amendment No. 15 is opposed on the basis that it involves unnecessary administrative procedures which would add to the cost of operating the scheme. Notification of grants will be published in the Commonwealth of Australia Gazette and later in the PVR Journal which will be available at Department of Primary Industry capital city offices.
