Senator WATSON —by leave-There are 15 members of the Joint Committee of Public Accounts. The Senate will recall that some time ago when the numbers were increased the Government had a majority of nine members to six from the Opposition. This caused some difficulty. At the last change of membership of the Committee it was agreed that that membership be changed to an 8:7 basis-eight Government members and seven Opposition members. If Senator Macklin's proposal is carried and if we do not proceed with Senator Giles's nomination, the Government technically could be in a minority on this Committee. I do not think that would be very acceptable to the Government or even to this Parliament. So under the circumstances we should proceed with Senator Gareth Evans's suggestion and accept the nomination of Senator Giles from the Labor Party.
