Senator CROWLEY —My question is to the Minister representing the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Tourism. Further to the establishment last November of the Task Force for Women's Sport, headed by Mrs Margaret Pewtress, it has proposed a draft national policy for women in sport. Can the Minister tell us when such a policy might be available and how widely the policy document will be distributed? In addition, will there be discussions with interested parties prior to the implementation of the policy, and what prospects are there for women in the sporting community to contribute? Can the Minister say what other initiatives the Task Force for Women's Sport is proposing?

Senator RYAN —As Senator Crowley will be aware, the Task Force for Women's Sport was established by the Australian Sports Commission on 2 November 1986 and is a direct outcome of the working group's report entitled `Women, sport and the media'. That working group was ably chaired by Senator Crowley. The Task Force has been working diligently and has prepared an action plan which I table for the perusal of honourable senators. Central to this action plan is the preparation of a national policy for women's sport. Such a policy will act as a framework for future activities by government, sporting bodies and sportswomen in Australia.

The Task Force will complete a draft policy at its next meeting on 11 March 1987. As soon as possible after that date the policy will be circulated widely for comment to national and State sporting organisations, women's groups and interested individuals. The Task Force believes that this kind of consultation is vital to ensure that the policy reflects the views of those whom it is intended to assist. After this consultation, the national policy will be put to the Australian Sports Commission for consideration and endorsement. I congratulate the Commission for its initiative in establishing the Task Force for Women's Sport.
