Senator JONES —by leave-On 9 May 1985 the following matter was referred to the Standing Committee on Science, Technology and the Environment: The question of whether an urgent investigation should be undertaken into the crown of thorns starfish threat to the Great Barrier Reef. This reference arose as a result of debate on 28 March and 9 May 1985 on a motion by the late Senator Missen relating to the preservation of the Great Barrier Reef.

On 30 April 1985, Mr Peter Milton, Chairman of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Conservation, wrote informing me that the House of Representatives Committee had decided to investigate the impact of the crown of thorns starfish and the impact on the reef of erosion from the Daintree Road. Mr Milton indicated that the areas outlined in Senator Missen's motion would be included in the investigation. Our Committee decided that it would take no action in this matter as it was being investigated by the House of Representatives Environment and Conservation Committee. That Committee tabled its report entitled `Protection of the Great Barrier Reef' in November 1985, and I understand it is now being considered by the Government.

The Standing Committee on Science, Technology and the Environment believes that, as this matter has now been investigated and reported on by the House of Representatives Environment and Conservation Committee, it should no longer continue as a reference.
