Senator SIR JOHN CARRICK —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Defence. I refer to the recently published satellite photographs of Cam Ranh Bay in Vietnam and the analysis of the naval surface vessels, submarines and military aircraft that was announced by the United States defence authorities. I ask: Has the Government sought to confirm this information? If so, what is the result of that investigation? If the Government has not sought to confirm or deny the accuracy of assertions which indicate a major Russian military buildup in the Pacific region, why has it not done so?

Senator GARETH EVANS —I think discretion is always the better part of valour in defence matters. I will refer that to the Defence Minister.
