Senator GARETH EVANS (Manager of Government Business in the Senate) —Mr President, I seek leave to amend the text of the notice of motion concerning the hours of meeting.

Leave granted.

Senator GARETH EVANS —I move:

That, unless otherwise ordered, the hours of meeting of the Senate for the current two weeks of sitting be as follows:

(a) during the first sitting week-

Tuesday, 2 p.m.-6.30 p.m.

8 p.m.-10.30 p.m.

Wednesday, 10 a.m.-12.45 p.m.

2 p.m.-7.30 p.m.

Thursday, 10 a.m.-6.30 p.m.

8 p.m.-10.30 p.m.

Friday, 9 a.m.-12.45 p.m.

2 p.m.-3.45 p.m.; and

(b) during the second sitting week-

Monday, 2 p.m.-6.30 p.m.

8 p.m.-10.30 p.m.

Tuesday, 2 p.m.-6.30 p.m.

8 p.m.-10.30 p.m.

Wednesday, 10 a.m.-12.45 p.m.

2 p.m.-7.30 p.m.

Thursday, 10 a.m.-6.30 p.m.

It is desired by the Opposition to discuss these sitting hours further. It had been hoped that we would have a straightforward agreement for the continuation of the pattern of sitting hours that was established and accepted in the latter part of the last session, but there are some matters which people wish to discuss further. Under the circumstances it would seem appropriate, Mr President, to adopt these hours, in continuation of the previous session, for the next couple of weeks and come back to the Senate chamber at a later stage, hopefully to endorse them but perhaps to vary them in some respects.
