(Question No. 1451)


Senator Vallentine asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 21 October:

(1) Are the VLF or HF facilities at North West Cape used for communication with B-52 bombers of the US Air Force flying from Guam through Darwin on surveillance missions over the Indian Ocean.

(2) How many times have B-52 bombers stopped off in Darwin since the agreement was signed; and what are the figures for each year up to the present.

(3) Have these B-52s on any occasion used the landing facilities at Diego Garcia.


Senator Gareth Evans —The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) No.

(2) Since B52 operations through Darwin began in 1981 there have been 141 B52 aircraft landings to 30 November 1986. The figures for each year up to the present are as follows:

1981-19 B52 landings in Darwin.

1982-22 B52 landings in Darwin.

1983-29 B52 landings in Darwin.

1984-28 B52 landings in Darwin.

1985-21 B52 landings in Darwin.

1986-22 B52 landings in Darwin (to 30 November).
