(Question No. 1233)

Senator Archer asked the Minister representing the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 19 August 1986:

(1) What instructions were issued by the Attorney-General in relation to the apprehension and extradition of Robert Trimbole in 1986.

(2) To whom were those instructions directed.

(3) On what date were those instructions issued.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Attorney- General has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1), (2) and (3) The question of the location and apprehension of Trimbole is a matter for authorities responsible to the Special Minister of State. My Department would only commence the process of extradition following receipt of information from those authorities. The honourable senator may however be assured that if Trimbole is located overseas action to secure his extradition to Australia will be given the highest priority.
