Senator SIDDONS —I ask the Leader of the Government in the Senate: Why has the Government allowed the recent spate of media takeovers to go ahead when the legislation which will make these takeovers legal has not yet passed the Senate?

Senator BUTTON —I do not represent the Minister for Communications in this place, and I shall certainly obtain a detailed and sophisticated answer to that question from the Minister, but for the life of me I do not know what the Government might have done about stopping them. I am not sure that a Commonwealth Government has powers to interfere in the operations of the marketplace in a way which is implied in Senator Siddons's question. However, I shall seek to obtain a more detailed answer from the Minister for Communications.
