Senator RYAN (Minister for Education) —by leave-I present the following petition, which is not in conformity with Standing Orders as it is not in the correct form, from 218 citizens praying that roundabouts be installed at certain intersections on La Perouse Street, Red Hill, in the Australian Capital Territory:

To the Honourable the President and members of the Senate in Parliament. The petition of the undersigned shows:

That the number of accidents and `near misses' which have occurred in La Perouse Street between Flinders Way and Monaro Crescent due to the volume of traffic and excessive speed of vehicles using the street is of great concern to the residents of the area and to parents of children attending the Red Hill Primary School.

A large percentage of the cars using this and nearby streets appear to take little notice of the many traffic warning signs in the area.

Your petitioners request that the Senate in Parliament assembled, should: request action to be taken by the appropriate authorities to install roundabouts at the intersections of La Perouse Street with Flinders Way, Hartog Street, Carnegie Crescent and Monaro Crescent as a matter of urgency in an effort to reduce the speed of traffic and, hopefully, the number of accidents.

And your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.
