(Question No. 1485)

Senator Mason asked the Minister representing the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 12 November 1986:

Has the legal attache of the United States Embassy given information to you or your Department concerning an alleged record of criminal conviction of Dr Arthur J. Hempel of the USA; if so, what were these allegations.

Senator Gareth Evans —The Attorney-General has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

On 27 June 1986 personal representations were made to me by Arthur J. Hempel. During that meeting documentary evidence purporting to verify the fact that Arthur J. Hempel had no criminal record in the United States of America was provided to me.

As the question had been raised by Arthur J. Hempel, my Department wrote to the legal attache of the US Embassy on 30 June 1986 seeking to verify the claim. The legal attache responded to my Department's inquiry on 2 July 1986.

In all the circumstances of this matter I consider that it is not appropriate for me to make further comment.
