(Question No. 1433)


Senator Kilgariff asked the Minister representing the Minister for Territories, upon notice, on 14 October 1986:

(1) What proposals have been put forward to the Federal Government regarding the development of tourist facilities, including a casino, on Christmas Island.

(2) What decision, if any, has the Federal Government made concerning these proposals.

(3) Under what terms and conditions has the Federal Government agreed to the construction of tourist facilities on Christmas Island.

(4) Is land to be granted as a site for the construction of the proposed casino.

(5) Is land to be made available for other commercial use and development.

(6) Is land to be made available to the citizens of Christmas Island in the form of residential leases.

(7) What form of land holding is presently available to individuals-freehold, leasehold or other.

(8) Is it proposed that this situation will be altered; if so, in what way.


Senator Gietzelt —The Minister for Territories has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) The Department has received 4 (four) detailed expressions of interest for tourist/resort complexes, one of which includes a casino.

(2) The Government has agreed in principle to the establishment of a resort/hotel with a casino on Christmas Island subject to a detailed proposal.

(3) Formal approval of terms and conditions will be considered when detailed proposals have been submitted.

(4) Yes, if the proposal is approved.

(5) Yes.

(6) Yes.

(7) and (8) The Government is preparing legislation which will facilitate the leasing of Crown Land.
